What is Butter Coffee and Why is it Good for You?

While most people add cream, milk, or sugar to their coffee, there’s a strange trend going around that could just change the way we drink coffee forever.

People are now adding butter–yes, the same thing you spread on your toast–to their cup of Joe to create a concoction called “Bulletproof Coffee.”

The unique blend contains black coffee (nothing special, the usual French Pressed black coffee works fine), butter from grass-fed cows, and something called “Brain Octane oil,” an 8-carbon fraction of medium-chain triglyceride oil.

It’s a blend claimed to give your ordinary cup of coffee an extra kick of healthy goodness.

American entrepreneur and “biohacker” Dave Asprey first introduced the idea in his blog back in 2009. Asprey was inspired by his travels to Tibet and experience of drinking yak-butter tea, and claims that Bulletproof Coffee can improve cognitive performance and even support weight loss.

Although this coffee blend’s ingredients would make you think otherwise, the idea of the program revolves around how your body instantly uses the fats in the coffee as energy.

Those who drink bulletproof coffee to lose weight advised drink it as a main breakfast item, which supposedly controls hunger pangs and keeps the person feeling full until the next meal or snack.

In turn, this keeps you from overeating and craving for a greasy, sugary doughnut in the middle of the day.

Keeps Your Brain Healthy

Bulletproof Coffee contains multiple ‘healthy’ fats, specifically Omega-3 fatty acids, which help keep your brain and mind healthy.

Omega-3 fatty acids are known to help minimize depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and Alzheimer’s disease.
